Free project management software has its limitations. While some restrict the number of user starts, others can limit the number of projects or offer less knowledge support for you to learn to use the software.
Therefore, depending on your needs and the size of your company, you can opt for an open-source solution or a free version of software that can scale with you whenever you need to unlock more features.
These tools are necessary elements of any project management system, whether you are a small start-up or a large enterprise. This is why we put together a list of project management apps that are free-to-use, free-trial applicable, or offer a freemium.
Scroll ahead if you want to get to the overviews. If however, you have more general questions around the topic, you can go to the FAQ section at the bottom of this list. There you can also find how I picked the software on this list.

Something unique about Redbooth is that they rolled out an AI component in early 2018: “Smart Redbooth”. It uses a prediction algorithm for various aspects of task assignment, such as selecting the best member for the task or predicting the amount of time needed to complete the task.
Redbooth features include multiple task management views (timeline, list, and board views), dashboards, and reports, whose intuitive graphic visualizations are above average. Right now, their communication tools include comments and HD video meetings (available in the Pro plan at $9/user/month), and a group chat feature is on their roadmap. Switching to the Sprints view displays all your assigned tasks, organized by sprint. You can move tasks to current or future sprints or to the backlog with a drag-and-drop mechanism similar to Kanban.
One of its notable features is custom workflows. These let you automate assigning tasks to team members at different project stages and moving them forward with one click.

How I Picked The Best Free Project Management Software
I evaluated and compared the most popular project management tools on the market, both for their free versions and free trials. Then I weighed factors that make software a good option for project management, such as the criteria that follow.
User Interface (UI)
A hard thing to ask for tools that are completely free. However, the UI makes a big difference between one and another software. A clean interface helps us identify elements much more easily, aids in navigation, and basically makes our brains save energy.
Usability
The worst thing that can happen to you is having a glitchy, unreliable project management app which you feel it's going to crash every two minutes. Therefore, I looked at tools that seem more stable, and have the proper documentation to show you how to learn and master the software. This includes knowledge bases, tutorials, videos, and FAQ sections.
Integrations
How easy is it to connect with other tools? In this section I include pre-built integrations, connections to other apps through third-party software, and custom integrations that your team can build using APIs and Webhooks.
Pricing
Since this is a list that includes free software along with free versions and free trials, I give details on the different pricing. I also mention other relevant information like bulk discounts or special discounts for certain types of organizations.
