Why I picked Paymo: Within Gantt charts, users can click and drag on the timeline to estimate a task duration, then pinch its ends to extend or shorten it. Apart from the standard dependencies, you can set lead and lag time to account for overlaps or delays, and even auto-schedule tasks based on those dependencies and constraints.

Selection Criteria for the Best Free Gantt Chart Software

To build out my list, I first evaluated and compared free project management tools that include Gantt chart software functionalities as a primary project planning feature. Then I used the evaluation criteria outlined below to measure each platform against the next. I summarized each tool based on how well it met my criteria, and any standout features I thought were particularly valuable.

Here are the criteria I used in my research:

Core Functionality

Of course, the baseline functionality required to make it onto my list is a Gantt chart maker. The software has to have a Gantt chart view, or at a minimum a bar chart view that can be configured as a Gantt chart.

Key Features

Beyond the core functionality, here are some specific features I looked for in these tools:

  • Other views: Roadmap views and Kanban boards can be useful to manage your tasks or visualize entire projects in another way.
  • Task management: Being able to outline and schedule tasks, create subtasks and task lists, set task dependencies, and add assignees.
  • Resource management: This might be time tracking tools, access permissions, resource allocation tools, and team collaboration tools.


An intuitive user interface is something I look for in all software. More specifically, I looked for user-friendly features like a drag-and-drop Gantt chart maker and project templates and Gantt chart templates. I also kept an eye out for mobile apps for iOS and Android devices, or at least a responsive web-based app that’s mobile-friendly.


It’s important that your online Gantt chart software integrates with your other core tech stack. So I looked for software options that integrate with other common project management solutions like Asana, Jira, Wrike, and Microsoft Project. I also looked for integrations with common workplace tools like Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, and


Every software on my list is accessible to some degree for free. Some offer free forever plans while others have free trials. I also took into account whether the free plan has specific restrictions like the number of project tasks or number of team members. I’ve noted the starting cost for a paid plan for each software, too.
