While free Gantt chart software is great for small teams or low-budget projects, investing in paid Gantt chart tools can be worth it. It can give you access to more features and projects, as well as include more team members on the platform.

Free versions of Gantt chart software often limit features, projects, and/or team members. Completely free tools, such as open-source or community tools, are also limited in the sense that they often don’t have the same knowledge bases and support teams that paid tools have.

In the rest of this article, I explain which free Gantt chart tools have limitations to their functionality and what the limitations are. I also go over what to look for in a tool and what each program does best, so it’s easy for you to find the right fit.

Overviews Of The Best Free Gantt Chart Software

Here’s a brief description of each of the free Gantt chart software on my list showing what it does best, plus screenshots to showcase some of the features.

1

Miro

Best for companies looking to create visually attractive Gantt charts

Miro is an online collaboration platform that makes planning projects on a timeline using Gantt charts an interactive experience.

Why I picked Miro: It is intuitive, user-friendly, and offers a free version, making it an excellent choice for small teams or businesses on a budget who want to manage their projects. The software has Gantt chart templates where you can add tasks, notes, and images related to your projects. Tasks can also be divided into smaller subtasks with individual deadlines and owners assigned if needed. Users can comment directly on tasks and subtasks, helping teams stay connected throughout the project's lifespan. Organizations can customize the appearance of their Gantt charts with labels and color-coding options. Additionally, you can filter timelines by task type or assignee to quickly review progress without scrolling through all tasks.

This helps maintain consistency among all team members involved in a project and ensures that all data is up-to-date and accurate. Miro offers features for tracking project details, such as budgeting and sources allocated, which can be viewed from its project dashboard. Furthermore, it has an activity log that helps you track who did what and when regarding task assignments and completion status updates. Its comprehensive analysis tools allow companies to stay on top of all project details without overwhelming themselves with too much data.

Miro Standout Features & Integrations

Features include real-time collaboration, sticky notes, video calling, image and video inserts, freehand drawing, cards you can use for tasks, due dates, and milestone markers.

Integrations include many third-party applications like Slack, Dropbox, Google Calendar, Trello, and JIRA, allowing seamless collaboration across teams using different tools and platforms. These integrations enable users to keep all project details in one place without switching back and forth between other apps or software programs.

Why I picked Instagantt: The software is available as a standalone solution or as part of the Asana work management platform for existing Asana users. Instagantt promotes collaboration between team members, as well as internal and external stakeholders, by giving them the ability to share and work together on charts. This will help ensure consistency across the entire project lifecycle.

In addition to drag-and-drop scheduling, the tool also features the card Kanban system. This provides you with a Kanban board view, which allows your team members to focus on their assigned tasks as they gain broader visibility into work in progress (WIP).

How I Picked The Best Free Gantt Chart Software

I evaluated and compared free Gantt chart software on the market that includes Gantt chart functionality as a primary project planning feature. Then I weighed factors that make this kind of software a good option for anyone looking for a free tool, such as the ones that follow.

User Interface (UI)

Is the Gantt chart creator aesthetically pleasing, interactive, and easy to use? The UI plays an important part in the user experience and could be a big detractor if it's not properly designed.

Usability

Are there Gantt chart templates, drag-and-drop features, and point-and-click simplicity when it comes to building a chart? Do they offer a mobile app, iOS and Android, for workflow charting on the go? Does the project management solution come with adequate (free) training and tutorials?

Integrations

Does the Gantt tool connect with other common online project management or online team collaboration workplace software? For example, Microsoft Project, Bitrix24, Redbooth, Google Docs, Slack, Asana, Jira Agile, and so on.

Pricing

Some of the items on this list are free versions of paid software. Therefore, I try to see if the free version is feature-rich enough to justify onboarding your team.
